Golf and EU policies

April 21, 2008

For golf, the priority so far has been on the large and increasing stock of EU legislation on environmental issues. Much of this legislation has already impacted on golf. Water and pesticides are amongst the most important EU environment policy areas for golf:

  • The Water Framework Directive is currently being implemented. The Directive’s environmental objectives for water quality have to be met by 2015. In the long-term this Directive could have a major impact on how golf courses use water; and
  • many control products used to combat turfgrass pests and diseases have been removed from the market due to EU pesticides authorisation legislation, which is currently being amended. Pesticides are also subject to other EU legislation on issues such as residue levels, substances in water, health and safety at work and proposed new legislation on sustainable use.
